SPORTS WORLD SHOCKED BY SUICIDE OF JUNIOR SEAU.  DR MURRAY OFFERS A BETTER WAY OF COPING

Hello,

MY FIRST BOOK "SMART TENNIS: HOW TO PLAY AND WIN THE MENTAL GAME IS SELLING WELL IN SPAIN AND THE PUBLISHER (PAIDOTRIBO) RECENTLY RELEASED A 2ND EDITION

WHAT IS THE REAL PROBLEM IN THE NFL AND PRO TEAM SPORTS? WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?

Never has the NFL and American football world been so rattled as with this "tipping point" death by suicide of one its very icons, the great Junior Seau, a 12 time NFL Pro Bowl selection and a sure bet for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  His brain will now be studied to see if he had a condition caused by repeated concusions that led to severe depression and suicide.
No matter what these tests reveal, I offer a solution that if embraced by the NFL would help save the image of the league and make the teams and players better too.  The game will change anyway with evolution, but the NFL would be smart to take the lead role in changing itself rather than waiting for legislation or lawsuits.

The solution I propose began in the book I wrote last year called "The Mental Performance Index." It is called the TOUGH GUYS TALK initiative (pages 54 & 55).

For too long, NFL players and coaches have equated talking with being soft and psychology as for those with illness and not strength, but nothing is further from the truth!

Peak performance training helps players win the mental game on the field. I proved this was even more important than we ever dreamed in my book in studying every play in Super Bowl history. By embracing and promoting peak performance mental coaching, sports psychology, and psychotherapy, players gain an outlet to express, and will turn to talking rather than poorer methods of expression like violence, drugs and suicide in the future.
The "Mental Performance Index" Book Becomes a Best Seller Ranked #9 in Sports Science on Amazon.com.

This growth in sales is not surprising to me as the book I wrote was endorsed by great NFL folks inclusing Tom Flores, NFL Films' Steve Sabol, Pro Football Hall of Fame Broadcaster Lesley Visser, Jim Crash Jensen, Nick Lowery, Jim Martz, Doug Blevins, and Dan Johnson. Even the great Don Shula gave me a quote that appears in the book about the need to reduce mistakes. It was just a matter of time before truth took hold. And in the book is the solution to the NFL's woes in embracing mental coaching, getting behind a Tough Guys Talk initiative, and overall supporting the benefits of sports psychology in the clubhouse and encouraging rather than discouraging this talk.

Tough guys do talk rather than hide. And in the future it would be better if they talked out their problems in a confidential session rather than turn to firearms, car driving off cliffs, drugs, domestic violence, or simply sad depression!

My Dad's First Book at Age 85!

My dad, J. Richard Murray's first ever published book at age 85 (see above cover) will be released this coming Thursday May 16.  This is clearly one of the most fascinating books I've read about a mysterious time and place in history never described and long forgotten - BEHIND THE WALLS OF A JESUIT SEMINARY from 1945 to 1956.  You already know how I write, and in this book you will see where I got it!  This is a brilliant and breathtaking exploration of the unseen both physically and spiritually and he is a pro at writing too!

Below are just 3 of many stars in sports who have helped my cause

John F Murray's Tweets

Follow me - @DrJohnFMurray

To show you how sincere I am about this, I have reproduced a string of tweets I chirped on the topic below. I was on NBC TV and Portand Radio talking about the Seau death too, and I will not stop until this changes, whether it takes 1 year or 100. Read the tweets below in chronological order from most recent first:

- Gotta have a good sense of humor or what is the point! LOL

- I think my efforts are starting to pay off in this book. Call it a tipping point :-) ... come on guys, smile

- I made a mistake. My book is actually 9th best selling sports science book on amazon:

- Tipping point has been reached with Junior Seau's death. We need people to act now to save more lives and help NFL too.

He was my grandmother's 2nd cousin - and I thought it was intriguing, but I guess he does not yet. LOL

- Polian a great NFL guy. He & I never met, so he might think I'm trying to use him. Only in a positive way :-)

- bottom line, we all want to win. The mental game is a win/win/win for NFL, players & society as a whole. Image key too!

- I'll say it again, u could not pay a Park Avenue advertising firm enough for what I have just given you in a few tweets

- see, I am really not nuts :-) ... just crazy! LOL

- NFL can be the good guy in all of this proactively by promoting mental coaching and psychotherapy for players in house

- and I think many players are scared of talking. Thus they never learn it as a coping skill and instead cope with a gun.

- It all makes sense if you would just please read my book. I love the NFL but I think many are scared of the unknown.

- why? I measured not outcome, but performance, on every play in Super Bowl history (with mental). It was key to winning!

- this & other analyses proved that what sports psychologists said for years is true. Focus on performance not outcome!

  - we intuitively felt mental part of performance was huge, but nobody rolled up sleeves like me for 8 years. Hard work.

- you great broadcasters for years said "Brady is tough mentally" but nobody measured mental performance until this book.

I have a small publisher. Good, but small. So few have seen it. - call it your diamond in the rough :-) ... you'll love it

- Tom Flores wrote my Forward, Lesley Visser my epilogue. Remember them? NFL Films Steve Sabol even endorsed it. Hello!!!

- the book is 10 times better than my first book which is all over the world and a best seller. But few have read it!

MPI statistic correlated w/ winning Super Bowl higher than any other traditional statistic! - why is this not headlines!

Book is "The Mental Performance Index: Ranking the Best Teams in Super Bowl History" & best teams were stronger mentally!

NFL sells on-field benefits of mental coaching proven in my book Post-career they use psychology, not drugs or suicide!!!!

YOU SAID it NFL radio - we don't know what's in heads! PRECISELY MY POINT & WHY PSYCHOLOGISTS CRUCIAL!!!

But yes, concussions contribute to earlier dementia

- if u live long enough you always get dementia but some get it in 50s others in 90s

- Establishing causality is very difficult even as a psychology doctor that I am ...

SEAU WAS THE MOSR POSITIVE IMAGE FOR NFL - AND HE IS NOW MOST NEGATIVE IMAGE - it is the Contrast Effect in psychology

- read malcolm gladwell .. The Tipping Point is causing this!!!!!!! Seau was the perfect NFL player and he did suicide!!!

  - you'll love the book and it will help your great interviews (book is "The Mental Performance Index") ... Cheers for now!

- I love football & NFL - u guys at nfl radio are doing a great job - i am your friend - email me for a free signed book

- Evaluating, training, dealing with issues with courage - all part of the mental game!

- please read my previous tweets over last year. MENTAL PERFORMANCE wins and loses games! I SHOWED how it won Super Bowl

- I've also done tons of neuropsychological testing. The game will never die but awareness of subtle mental change is key

- I'll mail a copy of my book to anyone at your good radio show. You'll realize my longtime "tough guys talk" initiative

- my third cousin is Bill Polian but I have not had the pleasure if meeting him. - but he has my book too!

- I encourage the good folks at NFL radio to also read my book The Mental Performance Index - my client gave R Gannon one

  - football will not die. Too great a sport. BUT THE TIPPING POINT HAS ALREADY OCCURRED and like evolution teams will adapt
