Early U.S. Golf History
Scottish immigrants, merchants and soldiers and British colonists brought the game with them when they came to the new world. High concentrations of Scottish immigrants were settling in the Charleston, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia area. The Charleston City Gazette indicates that the South Carolina Golf Club was founded in 1786. While there is evidence of golf making the leap to North America in the late 18th century, there was scattered play mostly by immigrants who had already been exposed to the game.

Golf did not really catch on in America until the late 19th century. In 1895, the U.S. Open was started at the Chicago Golf Club, marking the full integration of the sport into society in the U.S. In 1917, with World War 1 eminent, the U.S. Open and the PGA championship were cancelled. From the period between 1917 and 1942, a shortage of rubber and other supplies for the military caused many tournaments to be cancelled. During this period golf took a back seat to the efforts of war.

By 1900 the U.S. had over a thousand golf courses which was more than the rest of the world combined. Public golf courses also began to spring up. Van Cortlandt golf course in New York City opened in 1895 and was the States' first municipal golf course.

Today there are about 15,000 golf courses in the United States.
