Why are Golf Courses 18 Holes in Length?
Like many developments throughout golf history, the standardization of 18 holes did not happen as the result of a momentous and well thought out decision. And like many developments in golf, the standardization of 18 holes can be credited to St. Andrews. Prior to the mid-1760’s, and right up until the early 1900’s, it was common to find golf courses that were comprised of 19 holes, or 12, or 15, or 23, or any other number depending on the size of the parcel of land dedicated to golf.

Then, around 1764, St. Andrews converted from 22 holes to 18 holes. The reason? Some say that it was customary for each golfer to take a drink after completing a hole and it took the average golfer 18 drinks to finish a bottle of Scotch. The truth, however, is that the Old Course at that time consisted of 22 holes, 11 out and 11 back, with golfers playing to the same hole going out and in, except for the 11th and 22nd holes. The golfers decided that the first four holes, and therefore also the last four, were too short and that they should be made into two holes instead of four. This reduced the number of holes in the round from 22 to 18. Eighteen holes did not become the standard until the early 1900s, but from 1764 onward, more courses copied the St. Andrews model than any other. Then, in 1858, the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews issued new rules.

Sam Groves, curator of the British Golf Museum, offered the following information: “In 1858, the R&A issued new rules for its members; Rule 1 stated 'one round of the Links or 18 holes is reckoned a match unless otherwise stipulated'. We can only presume that, as many clubs looked to the R&A for advice, this was slowly adopted throughout Britain. By the 1870s, therefore, more courses had 18 holes and a round of golf was being accepted as consisting of 18 holes.”

Nicklaus Shares a Memory
"I shared some fond and funny memories of Arnold Palmer this morning on Golf Channel. One of those was out at Palm Springs. After the Palm Springs tournament, there was a jam session every night. All of the celebrities would come in, and the musicians would sing and play music. I remember that both Arnold and I had gone to the bathroom. When I came back, I happened to brush by a lady that had a wig on and I knocked it off her head as she was sitting at the piano. Arnold picked it up and put it on my head and took me out to the dance floor to dance. I switched it around and put it on his head, and I led the other way. We had a good laugh about it, but the poor lady was mortified, obviously. We had a lot of fun like that. That was a great picture." - Jack Nicklaus
