Big Hole Tournament Results

April 1 - 2:  Ou
r 3rd Annual Big Hole Tournament has become so popular that this year, we hosted two tournaments on consecutive days and both attracted full fields of 128 golfers from Virginia and surrounding states.  Several Bay Creekers did very well!

On Saturday, April 1st, the winners were Jack Burbee (elder son of Joe) and his partner, Miller Carr who shot a 17 under-par 55.  Joe Restein and Terry White finished third with a 56.  Hal Pfingst and Steve Grimes took second in the 2nd Flight with Henry Burbee (Joe's younger son) and Trey Mancini just a stroke behind in third place.

A day later, Restein, with Adam Wells as his partner this time, took the title with an 18 under-par 54.  Bill Hitchings and Mike Walsh won the 2nd Flight and Rob and Patsy Harris finished first in the 5th Flight.  Congratulations to all!

Par 3 Tournament Results
April 22: Joe Restein shot a 4-under par 50 to win the Mens A Flight in the 8th Annual Spring Par 3 Tournament on the Nicklaus Course.  Inspired by the Par 3 Championship at the Masters, every hole was shortened to 125 yards or less and played to a par of 3.  Jamie Ibarra and Ron Wrucke both shot 54 in the Mens A Flight.  In the Mens B Flight, Wes Benedict shot 66 to edge Shane Benedict (67) and Dave Baudoin (68).  Sherry Wrucke shot 69 and won the Womens Flight.  Seyi Adegoroye won the Closest to the Flagstick contests on Holes No. 4 and 15 and Wes Benedict hit the closest tee shot on No. 11.

USGA Handicap System
Bay Creek is a member of the USGA and the VSGA and our competitions are conducted using the USGA Handicap System.  The purpose of the system is to make the game more enjoyable by enabling golfers of differing abilities to compete on an equitable basis.  A basic premise underlies the USGA Handicap System, namely that every player will try to make the best score at each hole in every round, regardless of where the round is played, and that the player will post every round for peer review.  There are only a few occasions when you should not post your score: when fewer than 7 holes are played, when the length of the course is less than 3,000 yards for 18 holes, when scores are made on a course with no USGA rating or when artificial devices or non-conforming clubs or balls are used.  If you forget to post your score immediately after play, you can post it the next time you visit the Club or you can call the Golf Shop to have Joe or Zach post it for you.  Please call or stop by if you have any questions about the Handicap System.

New Members

We are pleased to welcome  new Bay Creek Members Mary and Landon Lovett of Hudson, N.J. along with their extended family Jennifer, Scott, Mack and Lyla Thompson.

Exercises for Golfers – Part Three
This is the third in a series of articles about using the equipment in your Beach Club gym for a golf-specific workout.  I suggest training three or four days a week, for 30 minutes a session. You don't have to do all these exercises during every workout, but try to perform at least one from each major group: Back, Legs, Abdominals and Arms.
As with any kind of fitness training, stretching is very important. After each exercise of 15 to 20 reps, you should gently stretch the muscle you are working. This not only improves blood flow to the muscle but it will help make your muscles more flexible.
LEGS
The best golfers in the world all swing from a good stance with a solid base. Balance and strength in the thigh, calf and glute muscles will lead to a powerful, fluid swing. Cardiovascular exercises like walking, biking and jogging will help, but some weight training coupled with stretching is a must for this part of the body.
During the backswing, the legs are your foundation. During the downswing, the legs are the engine that powers the machine. And by the end of a round, the stamina you build in your legs can be the difference between a good score and a great one.
Cybex Squat Press. Sit on the machine with your back on the padded support and feet on the platform. Extend your hips and knees, release the dock lever and grasp the handles at your sides. Lower the platform by flexing your hips and knees while your lower back remains pressed against the support. Return by extending your knees and hips. Do not allow your heels to raise off platform so that you are pushing with both heel and forefoot. Placing your feet slightly high on the platform emphasizes Gluteus Maximus, placing your feet slightly lower on the platform emphasizes Quadriceps. Use a weight you can easily lift 15 to 20 times.
Free Motion Squat. Position shoulders under shoulder pads with back against the back pad. Place feet on the platform, shoulder width apart. Release hand lever and squat down by bending hips and knees until knees or hips are just short of complete flexion. Make sure your knees are pointed the same direction as your feet. Do not allow your heels to raise off of the platform, push with both the heel and forefoot. Use a weight you can easily lift 15 to 20 times. Placing your feet slightly forward on the platform emphasizes Gluteus Maximus; placing feet slightly back on platform emphasizes Quadriceps.
Dumbbell Squat. Squats can also be performed with a barbell, kettlebells or dumbbells. The Beach Club staff will be glad to assist and make sure you are using good form.

On This Day
May 1969
Hord Hardin of the U.S.G.A. informs Arnold Palmer that no special exemption will be made for Palmer after he missed his first total exemption for the U.S. Open since 1959. Noting that Ben Hogan was given one in 1966 after recovering from his automobile accident, Hardin writes that the situations are different and that the “biggest deterrent lies in the fact that you are still active on the Tour and once we were to extend invitations to fellows in that category, I don’t know where we’d stop. Knowing you, I feel sure you see our position and, of course, we’ll be pulling for you to qualify on June 3rd.”

Sports writers around the country decry the U.S.G.A. forcing Palmer to qualify for the U.S. Open championship he won in 1960. Bruce Phillips of The Raleigh Times writes, “Arnold Palmer not in the Open? Might as well take all the slot machines out of Vegas, shoot a Western without a horse, run a political campaign without a promise. The man who took golf out of the country clubs and made it an addiction for millions must now join driving range operators, unknown assistant pros and amateurs in proving he merits to play in the Open.”

Jack Nicklaus joins the growing chorus of critics who are upset that Palmer needs to qualify for the U.S. Open. “Absolutely ridiculous," he says. "After all that man has done for the game, after all he’s won, I just can’t see how they can leave him out. They gave Hogan an exemption for one year. Why can’t they do it for Palmer? He belongs there.” Nicklaus insists there should be a lifetime exemption for past champions.

For his part, Arnold Palmer plays a practice round at the Youghiogheny Country Club and prepares to try the sectional qualifier to be held there in early June. To be continued...
