Quote of the Month
"At one time, the PGA of America held a Long Drive Competition in conjunction with the PGA Championship. I only recall us having it for two years. There might have been others, but the only two I entered were in 1963 and ’64, and I won both of them. In 1963, I won with a drive of 341 yards, 17 inches, while using an old Persimmon-headed driver that was 42 3/4 inches with 11 degrees of loft. Everybody used a wound Titleist golf ball, which they provided each player off the tee so that everyone was hitting the same ball.

I thought it was exciting—I thought it was fun to do. You would go out, warm up, you played your last practice round. It was a great gallery favorite. The people came out and they watched it. You went out and saw big, long drives—things you probably wouldn’t do in the tournament—and I think it created some excitement. To this day, 54 years later, I use the money clip I won in that contest. I’m very proud of it, and it’s also a fun conversation piece."
-Jack Nicklaus

Palmer and Nicklaus Battle in the 1967 Thunderbird Classic
September 24, 1967
Arnold Palmer spends an anxious 90 minutes in the clubhouse at Upper Montclair C.C. in Clifton, N.J., watching professional football and nervously asking, “What’s Nicklaus doing?” When told his lead will hold up and he will win the Thunderbird Classic and its $30,000 first place pay check, Palmer says, “You know this is the most money I’ve ever won in a single tournament.”

Making a typical final round charge, Arnold Palmer made a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to
win the
1967 Thunderbird Classic when favored Jack Nicklaus missed a 6-footer on the same green an hour later.  Palmer's victory, his fourth on the tour that year, was worth $30,000 and boosted his total career earnings to $182,393 -  the most ever won on the PGA Tour!
