Bay Creek Amateur Results

A very strong field of 144 of the region's top amateur golfers competed in the 12th Annual Bay Creek Amateur on August 3-4.  Joe Morton of Virginia Beach shot 67-69-136 to win the Open title by six strokes over Adam Houck. Last year’s champion Alston Newsom dropped to fourth place and our own Jack Burbee, 15 years old, finished eleventh.

Several other Bay Creekers did very well. Our Club Champion Joe Restein shot 75-70-145 in the Super Seniors Championship Flight to earn a spot in a sudden death playoff where he finished third. In the Second Flight of the Open division, Bob Kraly was sixth and Frank Wood seventh.  Steve Rosser took third in the Seniors First Flight and Bob Smith was fourth.   In the Seniors Second Flight Brad Whitfield was third, Claude Reid and Jake Savage tied for fourth and Pat Sigmon was twelfth. Frank Pegram finished eighth in the Seniors Championship Flight and John Jacob was eleventh in the Super Seniors Championship Flight.

The Bay Creek Amateur is VSGA points event for Men, Seniors and Super Seniors. The two-day tournament consisted of two rounds of stroke play, one on our Arnold Palmer Signature Course and one on our Jack Nicklaus Signature Course. In the Open Division, the Championship and First Flights played the Blue Tees, all other Flights played the White Tees. In the Senior Division, the Championship and First Flights played the White Tees, all others played the Gold Tees. The Super-Senior Division for golfers age 65+ played from the Red Tees. Pink Ball Tournament Results
Thirty-three members and guests participated in our annual Pink Ball Tournament on the Palmer course on August 15 to raise funds for Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital to aid their fight against cancer. The winning team of Brad Whitfield, Lee Robbins, G. Floyd and Jaime Ibarra shot a 14-under par 58!  They were followed closely by the team of Joe Restein, Steve McCready, Fur Robbins and Bob Smith at 59.  We had two contest holes...No. 4 was a Birdie Hole with three holes. A birdie on any of the three holes put the team in a Split the Pot.  No. 12 was a Hit The Green Contest. Players could wager $10-$50 that they would hit the green. If they succeeded, they doubled their money in Golf Shop gift cards. If not, they just made another donation!

A special thank you to Avis Gates, Julie Howat and Maxine Rasmussen for helping out with this very worthwhile event. And thanks to all the members who exceeded the $20 donation – and we had quite a few!

The weather was warm and beautiful and Palmer was in nice shape. The team of Mark Henry, Bill Hitchings, John Blackburn and Jay Wiegner took the win although Mr. Blackburn did have to dive to save the team's last Crab ball.

Arnold Palmer and Kate Upton
In 2013, Arnold Palmer gave model Kate Upton her first golf lesson and they appeared together on the cover of Golf Digest with the 84-year-old Palmer standing on a crate to match Kate's height. The shoot was done in Mr. Palmer’s hometown of Latrobe and both the model and golfer appeared to be having a fine time. By all accounts, the lesson and photo shoot went well as Ms. Upton declared “we’re killing this.”
