This 4-week series focuses on:
⭐ Partner & group pole foundations
⭐ Creative multi-person shapes
⭐ Clear roles, clean contact points, and smart transitions

Whether you’re brand new to partner work or looking for fresh ideas for an upcoming routine, this series is about playing, connecting, and learning how bodies work together on the pole. Yes, it’s challenging. Yes, it’s fun. Yes, it’s a little addictive.

Requirements: Solid sit, jasmine, genie, and confident climb. Best for Level 2 and up
What’s NOT a requirement: Being perfect! Or...signing up with a friend. Solos welcome - we will be switching around partners somewhat based on skill levels so this is a great way to make new pole friends!

Why Cross-Training is the Secret to Pole Longevity

Can you become a high-level pole dancer by  only doing pole? Sure. We’ve all seen the natural prodigies who seemingly live on the chrome and thrive. But if you look at the elite—the performers who maintain high-impact careers without shattering their shoulders—you’ll find a common thread: they don’t just pole. They cross-train.

As a studio owner and instructor, I’ve seen that the "pole-only" approach often leads to a plateau or, worse, an injury. If you want to move like a pro, you have to train like an athlete.

What Exactly Is Cross-Training?

In the simplest terms, cross-training is the practice of engaging in different types of exercise to improve performance in your primary sport.

The truth is, nearly any dynamic movement will help you get better. It sounds like a cop-out, but it’s reality. If you use your body in a new way, you gain body awareness. If you develop mental discipline in a different discipline, you can transfer that focus back to the pole. It’s all about learning how you learn, and then applying those skills across your life.

Target Areas: Where Pole Dancers Need the Most Help

While pole is a full-body workout, it is notoriously "pull-heavy." To keep your body balanced and functional, you need to target specific muscle groups that pole often neglects or overworks:

  • The "Push" Muscles: Pole is a world of pulling. To avoid the dreaded "pole shoulder" and keep your joints stable, you must train your pectorals and triceps through pushing movements (like push-ups or overhead presses).
  • The Posterior Chain: We spend a lot of time in hip flexion (think tucks and pikes). Strengthening your glutes, hamstrings, and lower back is vital for those explosive deadlifts and solid landings.
  • Active Flexibility: It’s not enough to be "bendy." You need the strength to hold those splits in the air without the help of gravity.

Does Other Aerial Art Count?

I often get asked if Lyra, Silks, or Trapeze count as cross-training. The answer is: kind of. While the circus arts are incredible for building grip strength and spatial awareness, they still rely heavily on the same pulling mechanics as pole. To truly cross-train, you should incorporate "opposite" activities—think running for cardiovascular endurance, or swimming for low-impact joint mobility.

My Top Picks for the Pole Athlete

If you’re looking for the most "bang for your buck," these are my personal favorites:

  • Ballet: Nothing beats ballet for lines, toe point, and lower-body stability. It teaches you how to engage your legs and core simultaneously—a skill that translates directly to a beautiful, controlled flow.
  • Calisthenics: Since pole is essentially vertical gymnastics, mastering your own body weight on the floor (planks, handstands, pull-ups) creates a powerhouse foundation.
  • Posterior Chain & Leg Strength: Let’s be real—our upper bodies get a massive workout on the pole, but we often neglect the "engine" downstairs. Training your legs and posterior chain (glutes, hamstrings, and lower back) off the pole is non-negotiable. Exercises like squats, deadlifts, or lunges provide the explosive power needed for high-climb mounts and the stability required for rock-solid base work. If you want a powerful pole moves, you need strong legs to lead the way.

The Fine Print: Overtraining and Risks

Cross-training is a tool, not a license to run yourself into the ground. When adding new activities to your schedule, keep two things in mind:

  • Mind the Overlap: Doing multiple activities doesn’t make you immune to injury. In fact, it can increase the risk of muscle imbalances if you aren't careful.
  • Do Your Homework: Every sport has its own risks. Research the mechanics of a new hobby and talk to experts before you dive in headfirst.

The "Productive" Day Off

The best part about cross-training? It allows you to take a "day off" from the pole without feeling like you’re falling behind. It keeps the spark alive and prevents burnout.

However, a word of caution: You must rest. Cross-training is great, but your body repairs itself during downtime. Ensure your weekly schedule includes days with zero activity. Your muscles require a reboot every now and then.

Elevate Your Game at Spinning Sirens

We’ve established that the best in the business don't just stay on the pole—they build the foundation underneath it. At Spinning Sirens, we’ve meticulously designed our conditioning and flexibility classes to target exactly what you’re missing when you’re only training vertically.

Our signature Pole-lates Barre HIIT is the ultimate "bang for your buck" class, combining Pilates precision, Barre stability, and HIIT cardio to fire up your legs and push-muscles. You can catch these sessions Monday and Friday at 6:30 AM and Noon, or Tuesday at 6:30 AM.

For the aerialists, Aerialates is our dedicated conditioning powerhouse designed to make you feel rock-solid on the silks or lyra. Join us Thursday at 6:30 AM or Noon, and Sunday mornings to bridge the gap between "just working out" and true training for flight.

If you're looking to master active flexibility—the strength to hold your extensions without a hand to grab—our Saturday morning Flexy Lab sessions for Upper Arc and Long Lines are where the magic happens.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the options or aren't sure if you need more HIIT or more mobility, stop guessing and start strategizing. Join Ann and Kacie on March 3rd at 5:00 PM for our Pole Goals & Progress Blueprint workshop. In this 90-minute deep dive, they will help you identify your specific weaknesses and build a customized cross-training plan to get you to your next level.

The truth of it all is that anything will help you get better, but a concrete plan will get you there faster.

Siren Of The Month

✨ Student Spotlight: Katie âœ¨

One of our original “Founding Sirens”, Katie has been a powerhouse of dedication and a constant source of inspiration as she’s evolved from a circus “dabbler” into a confident, upside-down-loving Lyra devotee. Since she began “dabbling” in the circus arts about two years ago, Katie has become an integral part of the Spinning Sirens community. Though she’s always game to try any apparatus, she admits that Lyra truly feels like home—especially if it involves going upside down or practicing a thrilling drop.

Inspired by her friend Megan to give “circus class” a shot, Katie quickly got hooked on the challenge and the camaraderie. Whether she’s mastering new pole tricks that make her feel like a total badass or experimenting with Trapeze during open apparatus, her energy is infectious.

At a Glance:
Favorite Apparatus: Lyra and Trapeze.
Current Focus: Slowing down the pace and finding her “flow” in Sunday Sling class.
Showcase Veteran: Katie performed in our September showcase and is already looking forward to the next one.
Soundtrack: Currently flowing to Sabrina Carpenter’s “Don’t Smile” and Yungblud’s cover of “I Was Made For Lovin’ You.”

For Katie, the studio has been more than just a place to workout—it’s where she’s built a new circle of friends since moving to the area. Her advice to anyone starting their journey?

In Her Own Words:
“Stick with it and you will be so happy you did!! Lean into the community; the people here are so amazing and supportive. And you’ll get fun new bruises with every new apparatus you try!”

Outside the studio, the discipline of training gives her the motivation to work hard in all aspects of life. We are so proud of your progress, Katie, and we can’t wait to see you back on the showcase stage!
