✨ Freestyle: The Art of Just Dancing ✨

When it comes to pole and aerial, so much time is spent learning skills, drilling technique, and perfecting choreography. But there’s another side to training that’s just as important — and honestly, a lot more freeing: freestyle.

So what is freestyle? It’s simple: no rules, no routines, just raw expression. Freestyle is moving without a set plan. You let the music guide you, follow your instincts, and see where your body takes you. Sometimes it’s messy, sometimes it’s magical — but it’s always real.

🌊 Why Freestyle Matters

Freestyle is more than “just winging it.” It’s an important part of becoming a well-rounded dancer and athlete.

🔥 Physical Benefits

  • Improves Flow: The only way to get better at connecting moves seamlessly is to practice connecting them.

  • Boosts Stamina: Freestyling pushes you to keep moving longer than you might in a drilled combo.

  • New Pathways: Without choreography, you stumble into creative transitions and shapes you wouldn’t have planned.

💎 Mental + Emotional Benefits

  • Stress Relief: Freestyle lets you shake off the day and release whatever’s weighing you down.

  • Emotional Expression: Dance out anger, sadness, joy, or desire — movement is therapy.

  • Confidence Builder: You learn to trust yourself, even when you don’t know what’s coming next.

  • Presence + Mindfulness: Freestyle demands you be in the moment, responding to music, mood, and body.

🎶 How to Freestyle

Here’s the thing: you’ll feel awkward at first. That’s normal. It’s not a reason to quit — it’s part of the process. The more you push through, the more natural it feels.

Tips for Freestyling:

  1. Pick the Right Song → Choose music that moves you. If it gives you goosebumps or makes you want to sway, it’s perfect.

  2. Repeat the Song → Try freestyling to the same track a few times. You’ll find new ideas every round.

  3. Focus on One Thing → Maybe it’s body rolls, floorwork, or a favorite spin. Give your brain one anchor.

  4. Film Yourself (Optional) → Watch for the moments that look/feel good — expand on those instead of obsessing over the awkward bits.

  5. Play with Themes → Try “low flow,” “only one direction,” “use a prop,” or “move without hands.” Limits spark creativity.

  6. Don’t Judge It → Freestyle isn’t about looking perfect — it’s about exploring.

🏠 Where to Freestyle

  • At Home → Clear a little space, dim the lights, and press play. No pressure to record or perform — just let yourself move.

  • In the Studio → More room, mirrors (if you want them), and of course — community. Sometimes having others around inspires you to try more, or simply to be witnessed.

✨ Freestyle at Spinning Sirens

If you’re ready to explore freestyle in a supportive, creative environment, join us for our Freestyle Pole class at Spinning Sirens.

  • ALL LEVELS welcome — no choreography, no pressure

  • Every class is different: music across all genres, lighting changes, props, mood shifts

  • Optional freestyle prompts to guide you, challenge you, or spark inspiration

  • Space to dance solo, with a partner, or as a group — whatever feels right in the moment

💫 Best part? It’s free for members.

No rules. No routines. Just you, the music, and the pole. Come see where it takes you.

✨ Student Spotlight: Sam Randle ✨

Sam took her very first pole class on May 8, 2025 — and she admits, it was rough. “I couldn’t really do anything and seriously considered walking out,” she says. But instead of giving up, she made herself a promise: keep showing up, keep building strength and flexibility, and improve with every class. That decision has transformed not only her training, but her life.

Turning 50 inspired Sam to make a bold choice. “I realized I had two options: complain about aches and pains and blame it on getting older… or earn those aches and pains by getting stronger and more fit. I chose the latter. This is my year to focus on ME and crush my fitness goals!” That mindset shift has carried her through early-morning workouts, new challenges on the pole, and plenty of victories along the way.

Her favorite classes? The 6:30 am fitness sessions. “They kickstart my day, give me energy that lasts, and still get me to work on time. Plus, they’ve built the strength I need to actually do those cool pole and lyra tricks!” While she loves all the apparatuses, Sam says the flying pole is especially exciting, and she’s currently working on mastering Spider Pose. On Lyra, her favorite shapes are the Moon and Mermaid — especially because of how stunning they look in photos.

Beyond the physical progress, training has changed Sam on a deeper level. “I used to be a total people-pleaser who took it personally if someone didn’t like me. Now? Love me or hate me, I’m loving my life — and that’s what matters.” She credits Ann’s honesty and patience, the support of her husband Jesse, and the welcoming studio community for keeping her motivated. Her advice for beginners: “Don’t quit just because it’s hard. Be patient with yourself. You’re stronger than you think, and you belong here.”
