Distance Education Strategy Session:
A Focus on Equity
A dark skinned wheelchair user with long hair and a beanie sits at a small table, using their laptop to participate in a video meeting. The laptop screen is shown to their right, with the call being live captioned. The main speaker is a dark skinned person wearing a hijab and glasses, and 3 other participants are at the bottom of the screen, in smaller windows. In the bottom right corner, a yellow service dog bounds towards the wheelchair user.

Next Friday January 14th, the EdTech Center at World Education will host a Distance Education Strategy Session focused on equity in distance learning classes and programs. Cynthia Peters, Editor of The Change Agent, and Kamala Red, Instructor at the Mid-Manhattan Learning Center, will share how racial equity can be addressed in distance education classes. Penny Pearson, Outreach and Technical Assistance Network’s (OTAN’s) Distance Learning Projects Coordinator, and Neda Anasseri, OTAN’s Coordinator of Technology Projects, will focus on how accessibility features can support equity for programs, instructors, and learners. Following the lightning talks, presenters will be available for informal small group discussion.

Project Updates

New Project to Increase Access to ESOL
through Technology and Digital Equity

There is a pressing need to incentivize and educate policymakers, institutional decision-makers, and advocates for reform in immigration, workforce development, and digital infrastructure policy to create a coherent, transparent, coordinated, efficient, and effective adult ESOL ecosystem. This new project aims to dramatically expand access to ESOL learning and related immigrant integration supports for immigrants and refugees through scalable, sustainable program models and services that optimize the use of technology; and educate service providers and policymakers at local, state, and national levels. Please look out for updates and invitations to get involved, and join the Digital Learning Equity listserv below.
