Events & Announcements

In Memory of Haiyan Hua
World Education mourns the loss of Haiyan Hua, vice president for the Africa Division. Haiyan joined World Education as a senior advisor in 2008, and his work included studying why children fail to attend school and how education systems can be strengthened, particularly in the Middle East and Africa. He was appointed vice president for the Africa Division in 2015, where he successfully led projects in ten countries aimed at improving learning outcomes, strengthening economic opportunities for families, and improving access to education for children.
Adult Skills Network Launch

World Education is pleased to announce our engagement in the Building Adult Skills and Attainment Through Technology Research Network (the Adult Skills Network) research initiative. The Adult Skills Network is a newly-funded activity through the Institute of Education Sciences (IES). IES Director Dr. Mark Schneider has noted that this is the largest single federal investment made in support of research on adult education.

Last Thursday, we officially kicked off the project with researchers, practitioners, and other education leaders across the country. Listen to the recording of the kick-off webinar to hear the five research teams describe their innovative research on technology in adult education.

Strategies for Remote PD + Instructor Evaluation
As teachers adopt new, varied instructional delivery formats, how can we provide tools and strategies that strengthen teachers’ capacity to provide remote instruction? During this Distance Education Strategy Session. Next Friday, October 8th at 1 PM EST, Priyanka Sharma, World Education Project Director, will share how she created a process and resources for delivering professional development through WhatsApp. Then, Destiny Simpson, IDEAL Consortium Consultant, and  Amy Poland, Professional Development Coordinator at Maine Department of Education, Office of Adult Education, will share how they collaborated to develop a tool for teachers and their supervisors that facilitates supportive conversations around observation and reflection of remote ESOL instruction.

What We're Reading

Three Steps to Get Every Child Reading
There has been a global learning crisis caused by the outbreak of COVID-19, which is examined in the post "Three Steps to Get Every Child Reading" from The World Bank. Among low- and middle-income countries, 53% of children under the age of 10 are unable to read and understand simple texts. At-home environments are a major factor causing education to suffer because of the pandemic, and "learning poverty" is on the rise. Providing communities with visibility into the location of textbooks through the ordering and distribution process, World Education's Track and Trace program, funded by the World Bank Group, seeks to improve transparency and accountability of the education supply chain in Cambodia. This will help ensure that children have access to educational materials by providing better incentives and ensuring that books arrive better preserved and on time.
