CTE CoLab Announces RFP to Community Colleges

World Education’s National College Transition Network and EdTech Center are collaborating with the Urban Institute and four national partners to launch the “CTE CoLab” in response to equity gaps in delivery of high-quality credit-bearing online career and technical education (CTE) programs.

New research published by Urban Institute identifies opportunities for online CTE programs to better address the needs of their students and advance equitable outcomes.  Completion rates for CTE programs are low overall, and even lower for students of color who have long faced systemic inequalities and challenges accessing and completing high-quality credit-bearing CTE programs.

Building on this work, the CTE CoLab, funded by ECMC Foundation, will convene a College Community of Practice (CCP) of community and technical colleges to build knowledge, center equity in program goals and delivery, and develop and share resources to improve education and career outcomes in online CTE programming.

The CoLab is inviting CTE programs to apply to participate in peer learning, coaching, and research-informed technical assistance, with the goal of authoring and implementing equity-centered action plans. Through this work, the CTE CoLab will develop resources to support and build the field and collaborate with colleges in making their CTE programming more inclusive and accessible.

Strategies for Delivering Remote IET Instruction
Join us today at 1 - 2:30 PM Eastern for a Distance Education Strategy Session. Delivering effective integrated education and training (IET) remotely can be an especially challenging task. IET programs struggle to integrate relevant technologies used at work and to provide meaningful remote instruction for hands-on training concepts such as occupational safety. During our first lightning talk, we’ll learn how David Hilder from So Others May Eat in Washington, DC has developed innovative, engaging lessons using Google Classroom to provide lessons that develop occupational skills while seamlessly integrating math skills and digital skills. During our second lightning talk, Darryl Robinson and Troy Shockley from Congress Heights (also in Washington, DC) will share how they are using video and a mix of in-person and remote training demonstrations to effectively provide technical skills training to all learners.

Cameras On: Surveillance in the Time of COVID-19
Something to consider as you craft your engagement policies for remote live instruction: “...the added anxiety for some students who are asked to turn their cameras on may actually diminish their participation, as they feel a need to monitor their home, their family members and their intimate spaces while attempting to attend to classroom interactions.” Read on to learn more from this position piece from the Chronicle of Higher Education.
