Building Relevance and Engagement
to Keep Learners Motivated and Moving Forward
The next Distance Ed Strategy Session on Friday, May 13th at 1PM ET (sponsored by Essential Education), focuses on building relevance and engagement to keep learners motivated and moving forward. Ann Marie Przybyl of Literacy New York will start by discussing Teaching Soft Skills by Incorporating Workplace Readiness Skills Into Adult Education. James Brown III of Guilford Tech Community College (NC) will then share about Using Formative Assessment and Seat Time Data for Engagement and Retention. Following the lightning talks, presenters will be available for informal small group discussions.

The Collaborative Research for Educating Adults
with Technology Enhancements (CREATE)
Adult Skills Network Website 
We’re excited to share that the CREATE Adult Skills Network website is live! Funded by the Institute of Educational Sciences, the Collaborative Research for Educating Adults with Technology Enhancements (CREATE) Adult Skills Network is a multi-year project that aims to:
  • Create research and resources to apply to practice in adult learner settings;
    Expand adult skills research and technology use resources to address knowledge gaps;
  • Increase support for conducting and using rigorous research in adult skills and promote continued growth of the research base; and
  • Communicate and disseminate research and best practices to further contribute to the knowledge community.

Digital Promise partnered with four innovative postsecondary institutions to examine how micro-credentials may be used to promote economic recovery among rural learners impacted by poverty, particularly for Black, Latino/a, and Indigenous communities. Read our four case studies on how using micro-credentials can create real-time career pathways for rural learners.

What’s Getting in the Way of More-Effective
Digital Learning?
Distractions from digital technologies top the list of challenges that schools who have returned to in-person classes face while implementing digital teaching. According to a survey conducted by the EdWeek Research Center, 60 percent of teachers, principals, and district leaders cited tech distractions as a barrier to meaningful tech usage. In addition, 59 percent of educators said parents were having difficulty assisting their children with technology at home.
