The Innovating Distance Education in Adult Learning (IDEAL) Consortium helps member states establish quality innovative distance and blended learning programs by offering professional development, providing technical support, and facilitating a network of education leaders from across the country. We encourage state leaders that focus on professional development and distance education, digital literacy initiatives, and technology integration to consider joining this year. Opportunity through Technology:
A Conversation with Guilherme Braga

Meet Guilherme Braga, CEO and co-founder of the Brazil-based company Egalite and Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative fellow for entrepreneurs through the U.S. Department of State. In order to help connect businesses and persons with disabilities, Egalite has developed an online recruitment platform, an assessment of behavioral profile, and an e-learning education program that is fully accessible to people with disabilities. Guilherme took advantage of his fellowship with YLAI by establishing connections with companies in the U.S., as well as leaders in the education and technology fields. Learn more about Guilherme and his work below.

Perspectives on Persistence
A Review of the Research is a series of webinars sponsored by ProLiteracy that examines important issues in adult education. Each webinar begins with a review of the research, then provides an opportunity for participants to explore how they can implement research recommendations in their programs. Next Wednesday, May 12th at 2:00 PM EST, presenters will address the ongoing issue of learner persistence in Adult Basic Education (ABE) and how practitioners define and view persistence will inform the actions they take. We will consider different ways to define persistence (for example, whether measured by number of hours attended, attainment of a goal, or over the life of the learner) and discuss two prominent perspectives on persistence issues: a control/prevent perspective and an acknowledge/accommodate perspective.
Leveraging Federal Funding for a Digital-Ready Workforce
Access to technology and related skills for job-readiness is a crucial framework for decision makers, advocates, and others as communities emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic into a new landscape of work and opportunity.

Join the discussion next Thursday, May 13th at 1PM EST, as Rural LISC moderates a panel of experts from the workforce development and digital literacy fields to discuss current policies, needed reforms, and new funding available to enhance digital inclusion, technology participation, and upskilling for underserved communities.
Moving Forward:
Strategies for Building Program Capacity
and Learner Skills
Join us next Friday, May 14th at 10:00 AM Pacific, 12:00 PM Central, 1:00 PM Eastern for the next installment of our Distance Education Strategy Sessions. This session will focus on what shifts programs have made in the last year and what is sticking as programs develop reopening strategies. Karen Rivas and colleagues from the Carlos Rosario Adult Public Charter School will share resources and experiences with a human-centered approach that will be key to reopening for the 2021-22 school year. Focusing on meeting the needs of the moment and blending adult-ed student needs, Carlos Rosario is exploring offering flexible learning spaces based on what they learned during the pandemic while adjusting to changing local health guidelines and DC School parameters.
 
Next, we’ll hear how the Ronald M Hubbs Center for Lifelong Learning/St. Paul Adult Basic Education (MN) embraced a new approach to make technology-rich instruction more equitable. In the fall of 2020, they started implementing "push-in" digital literacy instruction. Adam Kieffer describes his visits to remote ELL class sessions in which he offers highly relevant, digital skills instruction.

Robert & Dorothy King Technology Innovation Fund Established with Gift from King Philanthropies
The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy recently announced the creation of the Robert and Dorothy King Technology Innovation Fund, made possible by a $2 million gift from King Philanthropies. By driving the development of innovative educational technology solutions for the needs of adult learners to combat America’s literacy crisis, the Foundation’s work will advance its goal of addressing the literacy crisis by addressing America’s low literacy rate.

at a Pivotal Moment:
Key Insights from a WES Social Media Forum
World Education Services (WES) recently hosted a Twitter discussion intended to explore the new immigrant integration landscape under the Biden administration and how it can be most effectively leveraged. The hashtag #ImmigrantsThrive was intended to set the scene for the challenges facing immigrant and refugee advocates in the coming months. Participants included World Education, Inc. and other advocates and service providers who offered objectives, resources, strategies, and tools to address existing barriers and inequities faced by immigrants in the U.S.
