The EdTech Center and the Literacy Language and Technology Research Group at Portland State University are researching employer-supported learning opportunities in order to unearth the characteristics of effective work-based and employer supported educational offerings. The team has crafted a process for creating persona based on research findings and are using it to define for whom such learning needs to be designed. What We're Reading

National Skills Coalition:
Federal government allows use of TANF, SNAP E&T,
WIOA funds to support digital inclusion

The rapid shift to online services caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has laid bare the barriers to digital inclusion faced by millions of US workers and jobseekers. Even as adult education organizations, community colleges, and workforce development providers have converted their programs almost overnight into distance learning or other virtual services, a significant percentage of their constituents have been unable to access those services because of such barriers.

In Case You Missed It

The ETC’s Jen Vanek authored a digital skills instruction toolkit as part of AIR’s Teaching Skills that Matter (TSTM) initiative. TSTM toolkits,  available on LINCS,  feature briefs, case studies, and lesson plans that help teachers integrate transferable skills using approaches like, project-based learning and problem solving.
New Microsoft Initiative Supporting
Digital Skill Development for COVID-19 Economy

Microsoft has launched a $20 million initiative to connect adult learners to opportunities to develop skills needed for work. Building on jobs and skills data from the LinkedIn Economic Graph, it provides free access to content in LinkedIn Learning, Microsoft Learn, and the GitHub Learning Lab, leading to Microsoft Certifications and LinkedIn job seeking tools. $5 million will go to community-based nonprofits led by and serving communities of color in the United States. This is an example of large-scale employer investment in essential digital skills that the Digital US coalition called in its new report and new blog.

New Reading App Development:
Survey for Learners

GogyUp is a new app to support young adults with reading in the real world. The developers are calling for input on 1) features for the app that would help young adults comprehend both academic and workplace reading, and 2) how to tell others about this new reading app. The 6-7 minutes survey is anonymous.

Learners will have the option to enter into a drawing to win one of four $50 VISA gift cards. They are also seeking volunteers who might be interested in serving on their Young Adult Advisory committee and/or test the app. (All good resume building experiences for those interested!) These opportunities are included at the end of the survey.
