Contextualized Instruction

February 7 – March 28, 2017 (8 weeks)

Contextualized instruction helps students expand their career awareness while developing academic skills. This course provides a theoretical background and introduces practical methods for implementing contextualized instruction. Participants explore instructional methods that support contextualized instruction, investigate authentic curriculum samples, and complete the course with a plan for lesson development. Participants get the opportunity to experience a contextualized lesson from both the perspectives of students and teachers while sharing their observations and receiving feedback from colleagues and the course facilitator.

Course Fee: $341
Estimated Completion Time: 3 hrs/week (24 hours total)

This course is brought to you through a partnership between World Education and the College and Career Pathways Institute at La Guardia Community College.

Geometry: Teaching About Shapes and Their Measures

February 15 – March 29, 2017 (6 weeks)
Course Instructor: Barbara Goodridge

Geometry is one in a series of six courses devoted to improving numeracy instruction for adult education. Over the course of 6 weeks, participants work their way through topics such as area and perimeter through the lens of numeracy pedagogy. They try out lesson ideas that they can use in their classes. Connections are also made to the high school equivalency tests and common trouble spots for students. At course end, participants have the opportunity to write about how they would introduce their students to one of the topics from the course and receive feedback from the facilitator and their colleagues. Throughout the course, participants engage in asynchronous online discussions (weekly deadlines but no need to be online at specific times) and fill in entries in the provided course journal.

Course Fee: $234
Estimated Completion Time: 2-3 hrs/week (12 hours total)
