Digital Literacy Call to Action with Nell Eckersley
EdTech Partner Nell Eckersley gave adult educators a compelling “Call to Action” to go beyond consuming technology and become ambassadors for curating and creating information online. Read a synopsis of her keynote speech given at OTAN’s annual Technology & Distance Learning Symposium Conference held this Spring in Anaheim, CA.

Dr. Jen Vanek

Congratulations to IDEAL Consortium Director Jen Vanek on completing her doctorate at the University of Minnesota this month! Jen's dissertation was to work together with local stakeholders and practitioners, in this case AmeriCorps members, to define instructional challenges in teaching digital literacy to diverse immigrant adult learners and then collaboratively build and pilot an instructional resource to support their work. For those interested in the academic side of Design-Based Research, see the slides from Jen's dissertation presentation.

Using the PIAAC Framework for Probelm Solving in Technology-Rich Environments to Guide Instruction: An Introduction for Adult Educators

In addition to completing her doctorate, Jen Vanek has written Using the PIAAC Framework for Probelm Solving in Technology-Rich Environments to Guide Instruction: An Introduction for Adult Educators, a report published by the American Institutes for Research through a contract with the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) of the U.S. Department of Education.

Despite the prevalence of Information Communication Technologies in daily life and work, many adults in the US struggle with the steps involved in effectively selecting and then using digital technology (e.g., spreadsheets, Internet search, email, social media) to solve problems and complete non-routine tasks. Problem Solving in Technology-rich Environments (PS-TRE), one of the three assessment frameworks published by PIAAC, elucidates components of such problem-solving, including defining a task, planning a process for solving a problem, selecting relevant technology resources, and evaluating progress. This brief introduces PS-TRE by describing its components and then provides guidance to teachers on how to use the PS-TRE conceptual framework to craft learning activities that build adults’ skills in effectively solving problems that require creative use of digital technologies.

Learn about how Grazia Mora, Curriculum and Digital Literacy Coordinator at Building Skills Partnership, uses Kahoot! to make class fun while helping teachers check for understanding. "Finding ways to make our classes at Building Skills Partnership (BSP) engaging is essential as our students are immigrant janitors across California who often juggle multiple jobs, attend class tired having slept few hours, and are less comfortable with formal classroom instruction."
