Debating the Promise of Technology in ABE |
|

The recently published summer issue of the
Journal of Research and Practice for Adult Literacy, Secondary, and Basic Education included a forum on issues surrounding using digital technologies, particularly mobile technologies, in opportunities for both formal and informal adult learning. The forum kicked off with an an editorial written by Jeff Carter. Carter wrote of the promise of technologies with a caution against banking on the use of technology to solve deeper resource issues in the ABE system. Jen Vanek, Director of the IDEAL Consortium at the EdTech Center contributed a response to the piece with her own take on the nuanced issue of the promise of technology use in ABE. Vanek writes of the necessity of building the digital literacy skills of ABE learners and providing opportunities for online/mobile learning supported by teachers or trained volunteers. Drawing on the work of Virginia Eubanks (2011), however, she suggests that ABE stakeholders not engage in "magical thinking" about the role of technology in ABE. Rather, Vanek encourages us to embrace the challenges of maximizing it's promise while advocating more broadly for resources to support the system. |
