Blending College Preparation and Career Development for Adult Students in New England

By Silja Kallenbach and Sandy Goodman

The article written by Silja and Sandy describes the  Transition to College and Careers (TCC) Program, a 2-year project that addressed academic and non-academic barriers encountered by college-going adult students. Findings from the research identified that "both students and staff reported that TCC program components had a tremendous impact on students' ability and confidence (i.e., self-efficacy) to tackle more challenging academic work and navigate college culture and systems. Students who entered TCC with slightly higher academic skills in math and language arts completed their coursework at a higher rate on average. The findings also indicate that while students were attending the TCC program, they benefited from the sense of community and the readily available support from staff and peers that the TCC programs provided."

Our Math Stories

In our new issue of  The Change Agent, adult learners from all over the U.S. share how they use math to save money, shop wisely, solve problems at work, get places faster, analyze sports stats, and plan for college; how they have struggled to overcome math anxiety and step up to help their kids with math homework; and how math can lead to beauty, symmetry, and, yes, even fun!

Indeed, we need numeracy to fully participate in society and to be knowledgeable agents of change in our families, workplaces, and communities. And the math classroom can be a key place to practice reasoning and asking questions that lead to more information and more perspective. While it may be tempting to reduce problem-solving to a series of rote steps, math teachers strive to support students to see the underlying relationships and concepts. I particularly appreciate editorial board member Sarah Lonberg-Lew’s reminder to ask students to ask themselves, “What do I notice? What do I wonder?” The math classroom, it turns out, provides the perfect space for honing critical thinking skills, not just getting the right answer.

Special Supplement on Health Literacy and Adult Basic Education

Deadline for submissions: September 15th
https://www.healio.com/public-health/journals/hlrp

Health literacy and adult basic education practice have much in common, although they have largely developed as separate research, policy, and program domains. We hope this special issue highlights ways in which the health literacy and adult basic education fields have intersected and influenced each other to the benefit of people with the greatest literacy and numeracy challenges. We are particularly interested in submissions from practitioners working in public health and/or adult education who work in community-based organizations, coalitions, and public sector partnerships that have a focus on health literacy promotion. We are happy to consider a full range of articles as described in the author instructions.

Please email questions to Michael Paasche-Orlow, Editor-in-Chief:  mpo@bu.edu
