Using Distance Learning to Strengthen Access to Rural Healthcare Career Pathway Programs

By Ellen Hewett

A key challenge to builders of career pathway programs is creating entry points for adults with multiple academic and skill levels. The National College Transition Network (NCTN) has designed accelerated career pathways with adult education, community college and workforce systems and knows first-hand that this challenge is intensified for pathways in rural areas. Geographic distance, limited childcare options, lack of public transportation, and adult basic education class schedules contribute to this intensity.

Located in the very rural region of Southwest Minnesota, Southwest Adult Basic Education’s (Southwest ABE) Pre-Healthcare Bridge program uses distance learning programming to complement classroom instruction to address these challenges. The region is roughly the size of Vermont. The largest city has 12,000 residents with most communities having a population of less than 1,000.

The Nuts and Bolts of Designing IET Programs: Models, Tools, and Tips for Success
    Sunday, Nov. 12, 1 pm - 6 pm & Monday, Nov. 13, 8:30 am - 12:30 pm

This 1½ -day interactive professional development opportunity focuses on three themes that are key to successful Integrated Education and Training (IET) program planning and implementation in the context of WIOA:

    nctn conference

    1) IET program design considerations and options
    2) Partnerships with training providers, employers, and social supports
    3) Basic skills curriculum development for IET programs.

The Institute will be interactive with many opportunities for networking and learning from colleagues, including IET program presenters. Participants will receive hands-on training to use the tools that are provided and be encouraged to adapt them to their own contexts. They will leave the Institute with a plan of action for designing their own IET program and developing basic skills curriculum for it.

    FEE: $250
[Note: Addtl. fees apply to attend the NCTN Conference]

    Annual IDEAL Institute August 22-23

IDEAL Consortium members are gearing up for the annual IDEAL Institute that will take place August 22-23 in Minneapolis. The Institute is an opportunity for member states to check in with each other and make connections. Though this is a time of transition for many of our states, with budgets crises in several states and others completing recompete processes, the Institute offers the stability of a secure network where members compare notes about best practices, policy implementation, innovative ideas, and overcoming challenges.

At this year’s Institute, meeting topics will include:

    • Mobile learning: Promising practices for engagement and extending reach of adult education programs - Alison Webber (World Education) and Penny Pearson and Branka Marceta (CA)
    • Digital badging and professional development - Glenda Rose, PhD (TX)
    • English Now! project presentation - Priyanka Sharma (World Education) and Sherry Lehane (RI)
    • Blended Learning: Christensen Institute models in action - Stephanie Bulgrin (AZ)
    • Competency Based Models in education and blended learning - Donna Chambers and Nancy LaBonte (RI)

Plus plenty of time will be allotted for group discussion and networking.

Watch for meeting highlights to be published in September.
