Learning Circles Address Wait Lists for English Classes

According to the Adult Student Waiting List Survey conducted in 2010 by the National Council of State Directors of Adult Education, seventy-two percent of programs had waiting lists across all 50 states. This equals about 160,000 potential learners who were not able to receive access to educational services.
World Education, in partnership with Peer2Peer University (P2PU), has taken up the challenge to pilot a program model to serve English Language Learners (ELLs) who are on waiting lists. English Now!, a project of EdTech Center at World Education, is supported by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to pilot a framework that utilizes blended learning in a facilitated learning circle format.

Using the PIAAC Framework for Problem Solving in Technology-Rich Environments to Guide Instruction: An Introduction for Adult Educators |
|
|
Despite the prevalence of Information Communication Technologies in daily life and work, many adults in the US struggle with the steps involved in effectively selecting and then using digital technology (e.g., spreadsheets, Internet search, email, social media) to solve problems and complete non-routine tasks. Problem Solving in Technology-rich Environments (PS-TRE), one of the three assessment frameworks published by PIAAC, elucidates components of such problem-solving, including defining a task, planning a process for solving a problem, selecting relevant technology resources, and evaluating progress. This brief introduces PS-TRE by describing its components and then provides guidance to teachers on how to use the PS-TRE conceptual framework to craft learning activities that build adults’ skills in effectively solving problems that require creative use of digital technologies.
