【1. Learning  World シリーズって？】

年度末、新年度を控えたこの時期、アプリコット出版には日々教材についてのお問い合わせを多くいただいております。お問い合わせの声の一例を挙げると…

 

・ラーニングワールドは使いやすそうだと思う反面、成果の出し方がわからない。準拠の『カラー教具』は最初に買った方がよいですか？絵カードとどう違うのでしょうか。

・塾の中で英会話クラスを新設することになったのですがラーニングワールドで4技能をまんべんなくできますか？

・これまでベネッセで教えてきたのですが自分で教室をやることになり、小学生のうちにどれくらい文法を入れて教えるのがよいか知りたい。

・ラーニングワールドを使っていますがAchievement Targets のページを知らなかった。これはどうやって使うのか（指導書は持っていないので）。

・カードなどを使って繰り返しリピートする方がやりやすいと感じますが、それだけでは全然定着していない。中本幹子先生の講座に出てやはり目的をもって辛抱強く指導しないといけないと痛感しています。ラーニングワールドを使うとどれくらい英語が生徒の口から出てくるのでしょうか？

 

また、Learning World のサンプルのご請求をたくさんいただいていますが、テキストを見ただけではわからない、という方も多くいらっしゃるので「LWの基本情報がわかる動画」を作りました。

【3. レッスンで使いたい時事問題③ 機関車トーマス、キティちゃんと一緒に考えるSDGs】

 

入学試験シーズン真っ只中ですが、先生方にとっては年度末の総復習に加えて体験レッスン、新クラス開講等お忙しい頃かと思います。「受験や総復習などの緊張から生徒達を解放できて、英語の勉強にもなる素材を探すのが大変…」というお声もあり、今回は機関車トーマスと、キティちゃんのビデオをご用意しました。

 

メルマガ2020年1月号の記事３でもお伝えしました通り、新学習指導要綱では2020年からSDGsが小中学校の授業に組み込まれることになっています。SDGsとは、2016～2030年までの国際目標として国連サミットが採択した17のゴール、169のターゲットであり、発展途上国・先進諸国を含めて全世界が取り組み包括的な目標です。子供達が英語を学ぶインセンティブにもなりうるSDGsは、クラスで扱う恰好の題材の一つであると考え、国連が紹介しているSDGs目標5「ジェンダー平等を実現しよう」をテーマにした子供達に大人気の機関車トーマスを、SDGs目標4「質の高い教育をみんなに」をテーマにしたキティちゃんが英語で説明するビデオをご紹介します。

 

【素材1】

以下の機関車トーマスのビデオ “Goal # 5 | All Aboard For Global Goals! | Thomas & Friends” (1:49)を見て、続く質問について一緒に考えます。

【質問例】

1. トーマスは世界中を旅して、一部の人たちの間違った考えに気が付きました。どんな考えが間違っているのでしょう？（答え：女の子は弱いという固定概念。）
2. ゴードンは力持ちの機関車ですが、ゴードンの他にも急行を引っ張ることのできる機関車がいるみたいです。その機関車は男の子？それとも女の子？（答え：女の子。名前はレベッカ。）
3. トーマスと同じ青色の速い機関車が登場しましたが、その機関車は男の子？それとも女の子？（答え：女の子。名前はホンメイ。）
4. 女の子も男の子も、得意なことを発揮するためには、何が与えられる必要があるってトーマスは話していましたか？（答え：chanceまたはopportunity）

All aboard! For Global Goals. Hello! It’s me, Thomas. I’ve been on a big world adventure. I learned what an amazing place the world is and how important it is that we take care of it. Today I want to talk about how girls and boys should be given a same chance. Some people think that girls cannot do the same jobs as boys, and treat girls as they are weak. But I’ve seen that this isn’t true. I’ve been on a world adventure and seen all sorts of engines and people doing different types of work. Gordon is one of the biggest and strongest engines on Sodor. But he’s not the only one that could pull the express. Rebecca’s just as big and strong as he is. And they’re great friends. Mavis works at the quarry pulling cars with heavy stones. Paxton is really good at that too. On Sodor, Belle and Flynn work well together pulling out fires. And I used to think I was the only No. 1 blue tank engine until I met Hong-Mei. If girls and boys aren’t given same opportunities, then they may not get a chance to do something that they are good at. That’s not fair. But when boys and girls work as equals, they could be the best they could be and do amazing things. See you next time!

【素材2】

以下のキティちゃんのビデオ “SDGs Goal #4 | Quality Education for All!” (7:51) を見て、続く質問を生徒達と一緒に考え答えを導きます(ビデオの中の高校生や一部の登場人物は日本語で話していますが、英語のテロップが付いています)。ビデオが8分近くあるので、場面ごとに分けてご活用ください。

【質問例】

1. 場面1：キティちゃんがシャーロットさんの提案を喜んで受けた後、シャーロットさんがキティちゃんに何を送ると言いましたか？（答え：invite（招待状）を送ると言いました。Invitationの口語表現がinvite）
2. 場面2：The House of Councilors（参議院議員会館）の前にいたキティちゃんが、ここでうろうろしていたら、周りの人にどう思われてしまうと英語で表現していましたか？（答え：suspicious。怪しい人と思われてしまうとキティちゃんは心配したのですね。）
3. 場面3：大谷さんは、2030年には誰が世界をリードしていくと話していましたか？（答え：middle school children。2030年は今の中学生が社会に出る頃になりますが、米国では小学6年～中学2年をmiddle schoolと表現することもあります。）
4. 場面4：キティちゃんは、中学生達の発表前にどんな気持ちになっていましたか？（答え：nervous。キティちゃんは、自分が発表するわけではないのですが生徒達の緊張が移ったようで、I’m nervous for you. と言っています。）
5. 場面5：キティちゃんが春田さんに、イベントで一番印象に残ったのはどの部分ですか？と質問していましたが、「印象に残る」をどんな英語で言っていましたか？（答え：memorable。記憶（memory）に残る、印象に残るという表現です。使う頻度の高い表現なので覚えておくと便利です。）
6. 場面6：シャーロットさんから、インドネシアの学校でのSDGsに関する授業に参加してみるとのお誘いに、キティちゃんは大喜び。でも「手ぶらで行けないわ！」とキティちゃんは言いましたが、どのような英語表現だったでしょうか？（答え：I can’t just go empty-handed! 語源の意味としては日本語と一緒ですね！）

Kitty: Hello! I’m Kitty! In the latest episode, I was able to go to the UN, and it was such a valuable experience! And… Oh, I wonder who it’s from?! Hmm… It’s from UNICEF! Hello!

Charlotte: Hello Kitty! I’m Charlotte, the Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF. How are you?!

Kitty: Nice to meet you Charlotte!

Charlotte: Nice to meet you too, Kitty. My kids and I are big fans!

Kitty: Thank you so much!

Charlotte: Ok, Kitty, so today is November the 20^th, UNICEF’s World Children’s Day! I thought you might be interested to know more about how we help children around the world to know more about the Global Goals. For example, we help schools to teach about the Global Goals. So, kitty, maybe you are interested to know more about the work we do around the SDGs.

Kitty: Yes, of course!

Charlotte: Great! There is an event where you can see what the children in Japan are learning. Why don’t you join them? I am sure you will see the importance of learning more about the Global Goals.

<場面2.　参議院議員会館前からイベント会場へ＞　Time：1.46～　

Kitty: So, I am with my SDGs dress at the House of Councilors in Tokyo, where the event will be taking place. And this is… The National Diet Building. People will get suspicious if I stay here for long, so I’ll head out to the waiting room!

Kitty: I hear this will be the hall for the event… I wonder where the kids are. I think this was created by the kids at school. Oh, there they are! Everybody, Hello I’m Kitty!

Kids: Hello!

Kitty: Thank you for letting me join the event today. Hello! There is a lot of people, what kind of event is this?

Kids: It’s an event where we present what we have learned about the SDGs to the members of the government and we exchange opinions with them.

Kitty: That is very interesting! I’m also learning about the SDGs right now. Did you guys know about the SDGs before?

Kids: We didn’t know about them.

Kitty: Oh really? I also didn’t know about the SDGs until became a YouTuber. So how did you learn about them in class?

Kids: We studied each of the SDGs in groups and we presented them to one another.

Kitty: I see, that’s a great idea since there are 17 SDGs. Oh, can I take a look at the textbook? Yes, that one. Wow, there is a lot of information! Can I see that textbook as well? Oh, this is the textbook that UNICEF and the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs made together!

Ms. Otani: You are absolutely right Kitty!

Kitty: Hm, where is the voice coming from?

Ms. Otani: Hello Kitty, I’m Mikiko Otani. I am a member of the Committee on the Rights of the Child.

Kitty: Hello! Nice to meet you Ms. Otani!

Ms. Otani: Hello.

Kitty: I have a question, why did you think of creating these textbooks?

Ms. Otani: Middle school children today will be leading the world in the year 2030, right? In order to achieve the SDGs, children need to start thinking now by themselves can be involved and take actions in achieving the Global Goals. We created these learning materials to help them learning the global goals and the challenges at school.

Kitty: I see, because in 2030 they will all be adults by then! It is so important for young people to learn about the SDGs!

 

＜場面4. イベント会場での中学生達の発表＞ Time：4.55～

Kitty: The presentation from the students will start soon. I’m nervous for them! Well, I’m not going to be able to show you the entire event. So, here are some highlights.

Kids: We are going to present about the children around the world who cannot attend school. It is said that 215 million people in the world, one in seven, are doing child labor. I think that measures should be taken through the United Nations to learn social skills before working. How can we spread and instill the SDGs in local cities?

Mr. Haruta: We will start to include it in the school education. You students are very first, but we will soon start the SDGs education in all schools across the country.

Kids: What are currently doing to reduce infant mortality and eliminate hunger?

Ms. Makishima: A Nutrition Summit will be held here in Japan next year. We are planning to share the knowledge Japan has earned from years of research with other countries on good nutrition.

Moderator: Thank you all so much for today.

 

＜場面5. 外務省 地球規模課題総括課の春田さんとの会話＞ Time：6.09～

Kitty: Wow, I learned a lot today. Oh, excuse me, can I ask you a few questions?

Mr. Haruta: Yes.

Kitty: What part of the event was most memorable to you today?

Mr. Haruta: I loved how all students learned so much about the SDGs and were able to present and express their thoughts to us adults. I think that “no one left behind” is that anybody and everybody can do something to contribute to the SDGs. As a government, I have very high expectations of the kinds from today.

Kitty: I have high expectations, too. So… What did you think of today’s event?

Kids: Participating in today’s discussion panel where we were able to ask questions and listen to what the adults are specifically doing towards the SDGs really made me feel closer to it. I am going to share what I have learned.

Kitty: Yes! I am also going to think a lot more about it!... You guys are learning about the SDGs at school, but I wonder how it is in the schools in other countries. It’s a message from Charlotte!

Charlotte (message): Hello Kitty! Would you like to go to a school in Indonesia and join a class about the SDGs?

Kitty: Wow! What a great timing! Yes! I would love to go there! I can’t just go empty-handed! I need to get ready!
